A niche market has developed for self-service apps that provide real-time flight information, as a result of frequent flight delays and information asymmetry between passengers and airlines.

Currently, the State-owned app Umetrip and private apps like VeryZhun, have dominated the market, by cooperating with a large number of airlines and airports to gather information for travelers.

With primary functions such as searching flight status, real-time air traffic, seat information, and seating chart, Umetrip is an app powered by China TravelSky Mobile Technology Co Ltd, a subsidiary of China TravelSky Holding Co, and it was launched on both Android and iOS platforms in 2012.

“We are the only government-owned enterprise that provides flight information. In fact, there are barely any State-owned firms that focus on the Internet industry,” said Bo Manhui, the CEO of TravelSky Mobile Technology Ltd and the founder of Umetrip app.

“We don’t advertise much and mainly expand by word of mouth. Now, we have over 30 million customers, and we still need to discover more advanced and market-oriented business models,” he said.

Relying on the data advantages of its parent company, Umetrip has become the most well-known brand under the group. Within a few years, it has developed many innovative functions, including the function of searching the status of previous flight, which can help travelers to master more related flight information.

Besides, Umetrip hopes to increase its investments and capture more market shares. Currently, the company cooperates with more than 80 airports, and it plans to collaborate with over 100 airports by the end of the year.

“Still, we face significant competition and operating pressures in the industry, as well as brain drain. As an innovative company, people are the core and we need to respect the talents, draw on the experiences from Internet enterprises and set up a better excitation mechanism,” Bo said.

Meanwhile, VeryZhun is expanding its cooperation with some airports, including the Guiyang airport at Guizhou province, to provide air travel information through the airport screens. These information include the release flows, weather conditions and planned flight statuses of the airport and many other airports.
